Psychotherapy Services by Greater Heights Behavioral Health

Psychotherapy is about learning to locate and hone your own resources.  To this end, your therapist may serve as a guide to provide a safe space and to witness the process.  The human psyche is so vast that we will never uncover all of it. We have built-in mechanisms, or defenses, that keep us from taking in too much material at once. Without our defenses, we would not be able to think clearly enough to function. However, we can find ourselves living our defenses and missing our lives, leading to feelings of emptiness and patterns of overcompensation. This imbalance, or lack of congruence between the inner and outer worlds, may show itself in a variety of behaviors, often as overuse of alcohol, drugs, people, material things, work or even religion.

Psychotherapy is about gaining self-awareness. Contrary to popular belief, therapy is not about being given advice; instead, a skilled therapist opens doors to allow the individual, in a completely safe environment, to discover what is happening inside. Sometimes, therapy may look like dumping out a bunch of pieces to a very large puzzle; in doing so, the pieces begin to fit, and the individual begins to recognize and understand the self in relation to others. How often do you ask yourself, “Why did I just say that? Why did I do that? Why am I doing this? Why am I here? Am I where I belong, with whom I belong? Where am I going, and Why?” Ask anyone, and they will give their opinions based on their own needs, values and beliefs, not yours.

Psychotherapy is about learning to hear the voice that is your own, discerning self in relation to others and tapping into the resources that are buried deep inside.
